BECOMING THE FIRST TO JOIN RE100 IN HOKKAIDO
Coop Sapporo is pleased to announce that we have joined RE100, a collaborative, global initiative of businesses committed to using 100% renewable electricity in their operational activities, led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP. We are the first company to join RE100 among companies in Hokkaido and also among all the cooperatives in Japan. Coop Sapporo will continue contributing to Hokkaido by setting our goal in converting all our operational electricity usage to 100% renewable sources by 2040.
Our efforts to this mission are noted below. We are open to media interviews and discussing more details about the initiative.
We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your continued support and understanding of our operations.
1. What is RE100?
Led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, RE100 is a collaborative initiative bringing together the world’s most influential businesses committed to 100% renewable power. Renewables are a smart business decision, providing greater control over energy costs while helping companies to deliver on emission reduction goals. Japan-CLP is the local engagement partner acting on behalf of The Climate Group in Japan.
2. Coop Sapporo’s corporate missionin achieving its goal
・Source 100% of the electricity used in our business activities from renewable energy by 2040.
・Source 60% of the electricity used in our business activities from renewable energy by 2030 as a mid-term goal.
3. Coop Sapporo’s purpose and reasoning for joining RE100
In April 2016, taking the opportunity of the deregulation of liberalization of home-use electricity, we launched a utility business: Todok Denryoku (Todok Electricity). We are committed to creating a sustainable society in the energy sector in parallel with the food sector, particularly focusing on renewable energy. Our FiT Electricity division maintains a 100% ratio of renewable energy sources, representing the only case amongst all cooperatives nationwide. Committed to sustaining and further developing such initiatives, we believe joining RE100 was the next natural step forward.
Sam Kimmins, Head of RE100, The Climate Group
“By joining RE100, Coop Sapporo is sending a powerful message to both the Japanese business community and the government that renewable electricity is good for business and vital for Japan’s long term success.
With the cost of renewables dropping and a clean energy revolution underway, companies like Coop Sapporo are leading the transition not just because it’s the right thing to do, but also to secure long term competitive advantage.”
